The hot but not very humid weather made everyone pant in the pack. Apollo was no exeption, and as he panted, he rose from his laying down position. His big round ears swarved this way and that, listening for any kind of sound. Right now though, he was alone. They've probably gone hunting. Of course, he wasn't willing to add, without me. It would be too much for him. He tried to make up excuses, such as they don't know me yet, I'm still young, such and such, but not one reason was pleasing or appealing enough to comfort him. Sighing as he panted he looked down at his well worn paws. He showed no sign of the once royalty he was, looking so shaggy and unorganized. Of course, everyone looked like this eventually, but usually the Alpha's took a bit more time on cleaning themselves. For various reasons, he predicted. Yawning, he looked at the burning sun. The light screamed into his eyes and he looked away. Maybe talking to the head Alpha, Entian, would do him some good. Sighing once more, he started slowly walking along, laziness trailing with him. He wasn't exactly awake yet.

The beautiful trees of the grassland savannah was the only thing that could cheer him up. His bright cheerful eyes looked around, and then, finally he spotted the gazelle. But of course, he couldn't catch it by himself. He would just have a race with her. It would be the three of them, the gazelle, himself, and the wind. He started jogging slowly toward the gazelle. It wasn't common for such an animal to be alone, but it happened once in awhile. Obviously it heard him, and she started running for her life. Apollo started running too, running as fast as he possibly could. His long legs soon carried him close to the gazelle, and in his ears a bit back close to his skull so he could run. He stretched like the cheetah, going as fast as he could go. Soon though, there was long, and though the gazelle jumped over it, Apollo gave up. She wins. Sighing, but now comforted, the young dog went back to the tree. He really needed some water, but that could come in a few minutes. He needed some time to rest. Panting heavily, he sat there, letting the still-in-race wind cool him out.

Life was, and will forever remain, a difficult task. At five years old, it was a fact that Entinan knew quite well—more so than most, or so he was willing to bet. Had the pack gone hunting, he’d already be moving after a gazelle or something similar—the rainy seasons always brought such prey to their territory—but they had yet to go hunting; perhaps at dusk, the Makhadi mused. There were so many decisions to make, and although he was still learning, the African Wild Dog thought that he was doing a decent job of it.

Panting contently, he ambled along the dusty savannah, pausing to glance this way and that. It was habit to do this; where he’d lived before had been littered with humans—men that raised objects and threw things at him whenever they saw him. The memory made his lip curl somewhat, but he reminded himself that it was all in the past; it didn’t exist anymore, and thus continued onwards, happy in his own little world.

Inhaling deeply, the scent of spring and a variation of prey sprung forth into his nostrils, mingling with the smell of another member of Chamko. The pack didn’t officially have a name—it was just ‘The Pack’ in his mind, but the humans who had put them here had called their family ‘Chamko’ and, for the life of him, Entinan couldn’t figure out why. Still, days were not meant to be spent pondering on such trivial matters that had no place in their world and the dog shook his head gently, yawning softly.

Another form came into view and he recognized it vaguely as one of the other Mabeberu, although the name didn’t come into his head until about five seconds later. Running up to him at a smooth pace, the Makhadi grinned gently and sat down, batting Apollo with his paw slightly, in nothing but a teasing and welcoming manner. “Good morning, Apollo.”

The race with the great wind, which he called Mora, and the she-gazelle wiped the still young Mabeberu. The dog looked at the Makhadi in surprise. A longly jealous and admirative thought crossed his mind, instantly realizing who he was. Though the batting of his paw was gentle, the canine had jerked himself up. He was usually not too fond of surprises. Then he finally realized why he had not smelled the five-year-old male. Mora had been racing with them, of course, she was still racing in that westard direction, which was exactly opposite of where Entinan had come from. Happy that he was not alone, he looked at the canine, now his pup-like cheerful eyes focused on him. "Hey." He had not talked to any kind of creature for two days, and his voice sounded high and squeaky. He coughed and shaked his head, and made 'ahh, ahh' noises, trying to get his voice back.

"Oh sorry, I lost my voice. Hey." Apollo's voice was a bit better now, sounding like the usual, not too deep but not high either sound. He wished his voice was like Entinan. rich and fulfilling. Maybe when I'm older. He always pushed his thoughts and problems to the future. After all, this wasn't his adult stage yet, though it was coming soon, very soon. Then soon he was intently lost in thought, thinking about his future. He had great expectations for himself. His outrageous idea was to become the Makhadi after Entinan retired. He knew it was an outrageous idea, because most likely it would be one of the pups, but still, he could dream, couldn't he? Slowly, he recovered from his thoughts and looked back at the great male.

He wanted to say something to him, but he couldn't think of anything not stupid enough to make the other dog snort in laughter. So awkwardly, he sat there, facing him, hoping he would say something, soon.
